    Brahms, who was notoriously self-critical, was so pleased with this work that he told his publisher it was the best thing he had written in his career. It’s lyrical, soulful, cerebral and virtuosic — filled with the rhythmic pyrotechnics that only Brahms could write.

    Not for the faint of heart, though. One of the most difficult things in the 19th century chamber music repertoire. The viola parts are especially tough. Even professional musicians will have difficulty reading this if they aren’t familiar.

  2. Brahms Op. 88 Viola Quintet

    Nice edition of an amazingly lovely viola quintet. Not easy to put together rhythmically as there are triplets against duples in different voices, but well worth the effort to work it out.
