    I learned about this piece when I was researching Imogen Holst’s The Fall Of The Leaf. The dedicatee of that, Pamela Hind O’Malley, commissioned Matthews with Palinode the result. Palinode is difficult- it’s almost all double stops and not all of them sit well on the cello. They’re all playable of course but there’s a lot of jumping around the fingerboard and, for a piece marked legato, that’s an effort. It’s beautiful tho and it’s worth it.
