Question
Tom –
I have bought a couple of your rosewood viola tailpieces in the last couple of years among other related parts for a few instrument projects. These tailpieces are 129mm in length, the middle of the three widely produced size lengths (125mm, 129mm, & 135mm). My 17″ viola requires the longer 135mm size in order to achieve a bridge to tailpiece length one sixth of the string scale length, currently achieved by adding viola fine tuners to all strings, adding unacceptable mass to the whole tailpiece section and effectively muting the instrument to a degree and negating any value in harmonizing its tuning to the instrument. The instrument is a five string unit, but I am prepared to carefully drill an additional hole in to the tailpiece (to add an octave C, although this will change to a doubled C in the future or adjusted back to a conventional 4 string). Fiddlershop sells these 135mm long tailpieces, but their price with shipping is high, and moreover, the shipping and other costs are the big pricing issue that puts all North American purchases at a big disadvantage to Asian/PRC buys (I am in Canada, would prefer USPS/Canada Post shipping as well).
I would be inclined to purchase multiple tailpieces (rosewood, ebony, boxwood) in order to have a small inventory of these difficult to source 135mm long viola tailpieces (and 1/10 cello tailpieces for projected 476mm baritone viola projects), but this requires that you can source them at an economical price like the French/Hill tailpieces you have for sale.
